The film takes place in 1944 and revolves around the 761st Tank Battalion, an all-Black unit of the United States Army. The squad is led by a tough but fair commanding officer, Captain Wilson, who is highly respected by his men.

During a mission, Captain Wilson and a White fighter pilot, Lieutenant Cook, are shot down behind enemy lines. The rest of the battalion assumes they are dead, but a small group of soldiers, led by Sergeant James, believe that Captain Wilson is still alive and set out on a dangerous rescue mission to find him.

As they journey through enemy territory, the group encounters numerous obstacles, including combat with German soldiers, harsh weather conditions, and treacherous terrain. They also come across a group of French Resistance fighters, led by a brave woman named Simone, who assists them in their mission.

Throughout their journey, the soldiers face discrimination and racial prejudice from both their own fellow Americans and the German soldiers they encounter. Despite these challenges, they remain focused on finding Captain Wilson and bringing him home.
