Combat Shock is a 1984 movie by writer/director Buddy Giovinazzo. The film tells the story of Frankie, a Vietnam veteran who returns home to a neon-lit, crime-ridden, and poverty-stricken neighborhood that almost crushes his spirit. Frankie is a weary and fragile man, haunted by the memories of his time in the war, the loss of his child, and the disappointment of his wife.
As he struggles to make ends meet, he's disparaged by the people around him and pushed closer to the edge by his circumstances. His dreams and aspirations get crushed under the weight of his past traumas, his toxic environment, and his toxic relationships.
As Frankie becomes increasingly more isolated and detached from reality, he begins to experience vivid hallucinations and starts to have disturbing visions of violence and gore. The film's climax is nothing short of heartbreaking as the tragic hero heads down a path of self-destruction and irreversible madness.
Combat Shock is a raw and gritty portrayal of the criminal underworld that exists in the bleakest parts of society. The film may be difficult to watch at times, but it's a poignant and moving reflection on the challenges of returning to civilian life after war.
