The movie is based on a short story by H.P. Lovecraft and is directed by Richard Stanley. The Gardner family consists of Nathan (played by Nicolas Cage), his wife Theresa (Joely Richardson), their daughter Lavinia (Madeleine Arthur), and their sons Benny (Brendan Meyer) and Jack (Julian Hilliard). They move to a secluded farm in Arkham, Massachusetts, where they hope to live a simpler life and focus on their family.
One night, a meteorite crashes into their front yard, leaving a strange, otherworldly color on everything it touches. The family is initially intrigued by the meteorite and the effects it has on their surroundings, but soon they begin to experience bizarre and terrifying occurrences. Plants and animals begin to mutate, and the family members themselves begin to change. They experience strange visions and their behavior becomes increasingly erratic.
As the alien force begins to take over their farm and their bodies, the family becomes desperate to find a way to reverse the effects. Nathan turns to increasingly desperate measures to try to save his family, and the whole situation descends into madness.
The movie is a trippy, psychedelic horror film with a focus on cosmic terror and the unknown. It blends elements of science fiction and horror to create a truly unsettling atmosphere. The performances by the cast are excellent, with Nicolas Cage in particular delivering a typically unhinged and over-the-top performance as Nathan. The cinematography and special effects are also top-notch, creating a vivid and disturbing portrayal of the alien force slowly taking over the farm and the people who live there.
