CODA is a heartfelt and inspiring coming-of-age movie that tells the story of Ruby, a 17-year-old girl who is the only hearing person in her deaf family. Ruby's parents and older brother Leo are fishermen, and they run a small fishing business in their coastal town in Massachusetts. Ruby helps her family with their business by acting as their interpreter in meetings with hearing customers and suppliers.
Despite her family's love for fishing, Ruby has a passion for singing, and she dreams of becoming a professional singer. She discovers her talent for music when she joins the school choir, and her music teacher sees her potential and encourages her to apply for a prestigious music school. Ruby decides to pursue her dream, but she struggles with the guilt of leaving her family behind.
Ruby's family has always been her support system, and she worries about how they will manage without her help. Her father, Frank, is resistant to change, and her mother, Jackie, is worried about losing her connection with Ruby. Leo, Ruby's older brother, is frustrated with her for wanting to leave and feels burdened by the responsibility of helping their parents with their fishing business.
As Ruby prepares for her audition and deals with the aftermath of telling her family about her dream, she also develops romantic feelings for her duet partner and new friend, Miles, who is also a fellow choir member. She learns to navigate her personal and professional life, deal with the conflicts within her family, and find her own voice and identity in the process.
