Clyde Cooper, the protagonist, is a former cop who turned private investigator. He is hired to find a missing girl named Elise by her mother. She tells him that she received a strange phone call where Elise was frightened and asked for help.
As Clyde digs deeper into the investigation, he learns that Elise was a software engineer who worked for a prominent Silicon Valley corporation called Aeschylus. Many of Elise's co-workers refuse to talk to Clyde, and those who do, give him only vague and cryptic information about her work.
