Closer to the Moon is a drama-comedy film that follows the story of a group of five Jewish intellectuals who, after participating in a bank robbery in Bucharest during the final years of communist rule in Romania, are sentenced to death by the state authorities.
The main character, Max Rosenthal, is a former high-ranking police officer who is forced to be a part of the bank robbery by the group's leader, Alexander 'Sasha' Ionescu. Max is given the responsibility of managing the hostages during the robbery and forming an alibi for the group after the heist.
After their capture and conviction, the group is given an unusual opportunity by the government to re-enact their crime for a propaganda film. However, during the re-enactment, they make a daring escape in a taxi that leads to a tense showdown with the authorities.
The aftermath of the robbery and escape irreversibly changes the lives of all involved, including Max, Sasha, the hostages, and their families. The film explores the profound effects of the events on the characters, marking a turning point in their lives.
