Closer is a 2004 drama film directed by Mike Nichols and adapted from the play by Patrick Marber. The film stars Jude Law, Natalie Portman, Julia Roberts, and Clive Owen.
The film begins with the chance meeting of two strangers, Dan (Jude Law), an obituary writer, and Alice (Natalie Portman), a stripper. They are instantly attracted to each other and start a passionate affair. However, when Dan meets Anna (Julia Roberts), a successful photographer, he leaves Alice and begins a new relationship with Anna.
Later, Anna meets Larry (Clive Owen), a dermatologist, and they start a relationship as well. However, Dan and Anna's relationship begins to deteriorate when Dan finds out that Anna had been unfaithful with Larry. Dan seeks revenge by seducing Larry's wife, causing emotional turmoil in all four characters.
Closer is a complex and gritty exploration of love, sex, and relationships. The film questions the nature of truth and deception within relationships, as well as the destructive power of passion and desire. The four central characters are flawed and often unlikeable, but their struggles are relatable and the performances by the cast are powerful and captivating.
