City Streets is a film noir directed by Rouben Mamoulian and released in 1931. The film stars Gary Cooper as "The Kid", a small-time racketeer in love with Nan, played by Sylvia Sidney. Nan is the daughter of Pop Cooley, a mob henchman known for his brutal ways. Despite knowing the dangers of being involved in the underworld, Nan is drawn to The Kid and they begin a passionate romance.
As the film progresses, it becomes clear that Pop Cooley is plotting against The Kid and wants to take over his territory. The Kid is betrayed by his closest associates and sent to prison, while Nan pleads with him to leave the life of crime and start anew. However, The Kid is too deeply entrenched in the world of racketeering to give it up.
After he is released from prison, The Kid returns to find that things have changed. His enemies are now in control and he is unable to regain his former power. In a violent climax, The Kid and Nan are gunned down in a hail of bullets by Pop Cooley and his cronies, signaling the end of their tragic love story.
