As Darren and Steve are leaving the freak show, they come across a poster advertising a vampire named Larten Crepsley. Darren is intrigued and decides to sneak back into the show to see Crepsley's act. Crepsley performs, but Darren is caught by one of the performers and taken to see Crepsley backstage. Crepsley is impressed with Darren's bravery and offers to turn him into a half-vampire. Darren agrees, but only on the condition that Crepsley also turns Steve.
Darren and Steve begin their new lives as half-vampires and are taken under Crepsley's wing. They join the Cirque as performers and help out wherever they can. Darren begins to develop a close relationship with a snake girl named Evra Von, who becomes a good friend to him.
Things take a turn for the worse when a rival vampire clan discovers the existence of Darren and Steve. The two friends are kidnapped and brought before the vampire prince, who demands that Darren join his clan. Darren refuses, and a battle ensues. In the chaos, Steve is killed.
Darren is devastated by Steve's death and decides to seek revenge against the rival clan. He vows to kill their leader, but finds out that he is actually his own father, who abandoned him as a child. Darren is torn between his love for his friend and his loyalty to his family. He ultimately decides to spare his father's life and returns to the Cirque, where he continues to perform and protect his new family.
