Circus World is a 1964 American drama film starring John Wayne, Rita Hayworth, and Claudia Cardinale. The movie tells the story of Matt Masters, a former trapeze artist who now owns and operates a circus. He decides to take his show to Europe, but he is beset by mishaps and disasters along the way.
The film is set in 1901 and features a wide range of circus acts, including acrobats, clowns, animal trainers, and knife throwers. As Matt travels across Europe, he must deal with constant setbacks, including a train derailment, a devastating fire, and a deadly epidemic.
Adding to his troubles, Matt is caught in an emotional bind between his adopted daughter Toni and her mother Lili, a former high wire artist with whom Matt had a brief affair years ago. Lili wants to rekindle their relationship, but Matt is torn between his feelings for her and his loyalty to his daughter.
Despite the obstacles, Matt perseveres and manages to keep the show going. In the end, he realizes that his true love is the circus, and he decides to stay in Europe and continue performing.
Circus World was directed by Henry Hathaway and features sweeping panoramic shots of the circus performances, as well as memorable performances by the cast. The film was not a commercial success but has gained a cult following over the years, thanks to its lush visuals and compelling storyline.
