The office clerk, named Jimmy MacDonald, is played by Dick Powell. He works in a low-level position at a furniture company and dreams of winning enough money to start his own business and marry his girlfriend, Betty, played by Ellen Drew.
One day, he enters a slogan contest for Maxford House Coffee and his co-workers play a prank on him by sending a fake telegram that he has won the grand prize of $25,000. Excitedly, Jimmy and Betty begin to plan their future with the money.
Jimmy quits his job and starts spending extravagantly, buying expensive gifts for family and friends and even investing in the stock market. But when the truth about the fake telegram is revealed, he is devastated and humiliated.
In the end, Jimmy learns a valuable lesson about the dangers of getting caught up in materialistic desires and the importance of honesty. Meanwhile, Betty forgives him and they make plans for a simpler, more honest future together. The film is a heartwarming tale about the true meaning of Christmas and the power of love and perseverance.
