In Chicago, Velma Kelly is a vaudevillian who is convicted of killing her husband and her sister. Roxie Hart, a housewife, is also on death row for murdering her lover. While in prison, they meet the charismatic and scheming lawyer Billy Flynn, who convinces them to use their stories to their advantage and become media sensations.
Roxie becomes obsessed with becoming a celebrity and stealing the spotlight from Velma. They compete in a fierce rivalry to become the most famous murderess in Chicago, with Billy using his legal skills to manipulate the media and the public perception of the cases.
Along the way, they encounter various colorful characters, including the prison matron Mama Morton, the sympathetic reporter Mary Sunshine, and Roxie's hapless husband Amos. The musical numbers are interspersed throughout the film to reflect the characters' emotions and inner thoughts.
As the trial approaches, the tension between Velma and Roxie reaches a boiling point, and they must decide whether to continue their rivalry or come together to fight for their freedom. In the end, the verdict is announced, and their fates are revealed.
