Cherry Blossoms, also known as Kirschblüten – Hanami, is a German drama film released in 2008. The movie is directed by Doris Dörrie and stars Elmar Wepper and Hannelore Elsner in the lead roles.
The story of the movie revolves around Trudi Angermeier (Hannelore Elsner), a retired nurse who discovers that her husband, Rudi (Elmar Wepper), has a terminal illness. Although Rudi is unaware of his condition, Trudi decides to take him to Berlin to visit their children and grandchildren. Their trip brings back memories of their past, and they reconnect with their children, who lead busy lives in the big city.
During their visit, Trudi tries to break the news to Rudi about his diagnosis, but she struggles to find the right words. Instead, she decides to keep the truth from him and makes the most of their time together, exploring the city, visiting museums and taking in a traditional Japanese cherry blossom festival.
As they travel, Trudi reflects on their lives together, and her unfulfilled dreams and desires. She also discovers that Rudi had secretly been learning to dance, and they share a beautiful dance on their last night in Berlin, surrounded by cherry blossoms.
However, tragedy strikes when Trudi suddenly passes away, leaving Rudi to face the truth about his illness alone. The film ends with Rudi returning to Tokyo, where he discovers more about himself and reconnects with his emotions.
