Charly is a 1968 science fiction drama based on the novel "Flowers for Algernon" by Daniel Keyes. The film stars Cliff Robertson as Charly, a mentally challenged janitor who is selected for an experimental surgery that will triple his IQ.

After the surgery, Charly becomes a genius, but he struggles to fit in with his new intellectual peers and is haunted by his past as a simpleton. He also falls in love with his former teacher and close friend, Alice Kinnian (played by Claire Bloom).

As Charly's genius continues to develop, he begins to unravel the mysteries of the universe and also uncovers the dark motives behind the experiment that transformed him. He grapples with the ethical implications of the experiment and its consequences for his own happiness and wellbeing.

Despite his newfound intelligence, Charly ultimately realizes that he cannot escape his own humanity and that the love and relationships he had as a simpleton were ultimately more meaningful. The movie ends on a bittersweet note as Charly regresses back to his original state and is forced to come to terms with his own mortality.
