Wilbur the pig is born on a farm where he befriends a young girl named Fern. Fern loves Wilbur and takes care of him, but eventually, he becomes too big to stay in her home. Fern's uncle decides to sell Wilbur to a neighboring farmer named Homer Zuckerman.
Wilbur is nervous about being sent to the slaughterhouse, but he becomes friends with Charlotte, a spider who lives in his pen. Charlotte promises to help Wilbur by spinning webs that spell out messages praising Wilbur's best qualities to attract attention and prevent him from becoming dinner. Together with the other animals on the farm, Wilbur and Charlotte also work to win a blue ribbon at the county fair, which helps Wilbur gain recognition as a special and talented pig.
Despite her declining health, Charlotte stays committed to her goal of saving Wilbur. When the fair ends, Charlotte dies, but not before laying hundreds of eggs that will become her offspring. Wilbur saves one of Charlotte's babies and brings it back to the farm, where he watches it grow up and take on Charlotte's role of weaving webs to protect him from harm.
In the end, Wilbur learns that sometimes our best friends can't be with us forever, but their legacy can live on through the people and animals who love them. Wilbur lives happily ever after on the farm with his friends, knowing that he will never end up on the dinner table.
