Charlie's Country

Drama  Australia

Charlie's Country is a 2013 Australian drama film directed by Rolf de Heer and starring David Gulpilil in the lead role of "Blackfella" Charlie. The film tells the story of Charlie's struggle to maintain cultural traditions and his connection to the land while living in a remote Aboriginal community in the Northern Territory of Australia.

As the intervention policies of the Australian government begin to take hold in Charlie's homeland, he finds himself at odds with the whitefella laws and regulations that are being imposed upon his people. He feels frustrated and angry that his way of life is being threatened, and decides to leave the community and live in the bush.

Charlie faces new challenges as he tries to survive in the wilderness, but he also realizes the importance of the cultural knowledge that he has accrued over a lifetime. With the help of his friend Pete, a local elder, Charlie begins to regain his confidence and begins to see the value of both his own traditions and those of the whitefella culture.

However, when Charlie returns to the community, he finds that things are not as they were before. Many of his friends and family have embraced the whitefella culture and are no longer interested in practicing the old ways. Charlie feels lost and alone, but eventually realizes that he must come to terms with the changes that have taken place and learn to live in a new reality.

The film received critical acclaim for its powerful performances, beautiful cinematography, and insightful portrayal of the struggles faced by Indigenous Australians in modern society. It won the Best Actor award for Gulpilil at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival and was Australia's official submission for Best Foreign Language Film at the 87th Academy Awards.
