Charlie Says is a 2018 biographical drama film directed by Mary Harron and written by Guinevere Turner. The movie is based on the infamous Manson Family murders that took place in 1969.
The story follows three young female members of the Manson Family, Leslie Van Houten, Patricia Krenwinkel, and Susan Atkins, who were sentenced to death for their roles in the murders. However, their sentences were commuted to life in prison when the death penalty was abolished in California in 1972.
The three women, who had been brainwashed by Charles Manson and his twisted ideology, were initially portrayed as victims of Manson's influence. However, as the movie progresses, we witness their transformation as they face the reality of their horrific crimes and begin to take responsibility for their actions.
The movie is told from the perspective of a graduate student named Karlene Faith, who is sent to teach the women in prison. Through her interactions with them, we see the women grappling with the guilt and trauma of their past deeds and coming to terms with what they have done.
As the women slowly begin to open up and reveal details about their involvement in the murders, Karlene begins to question her own beliefs about rehabilitation, justice, and the nature of evil.
