Charlie Bucket is a very young and impoverished boy who lives with his parents and his four grandparents in a tiny home in a rundown neighborhood. They all subsist on his father's meager wages from his toothpaste factory job, which are barely enough to feed them through the week.
One day, a remarkable contest is announced by the legendary chocolatier Willy Wonka. Willy Wonka has long been a recluse, but he's planning to open his factory to the public again. Only five golden tickets are available, and they are hidden in Willy Wonka chocolate bars on sale around the world. The winner of each ticket will win a tour of the factory, and then receive a lifetime supply of chocolate.
As Charlie eats his bar of chocolate, he discovers he has found one of the golden tickets, much to the delight of his family and the envy of his classmates. Together with four other children, Charlie goes on the tour of the factory, led by Willy Wonka himself, who proves to be a strange, eccentric, and unpredictable character.
Along the tour, the children one by one are eliminated due to their own vices and poor behavior, leaving only Charlie at the end. Charlie proves himself to be a good and honest child, and is revealed to be the rightful heir to the factory.
As a final act of kindness, Willy Wonka decides to adopt Charlie and his family, ensuring they will have a better future. The family happily moves into the factory, and together with Willy Wonka, they continue to create new and exciting chocolates to share with the world.
