Rebel Heiress: Escape to France

Comedy  United Kingdom

Champagne is a 1928 silent romantic comedy film directed by Alfred Hitchcock. The film stars Betty Balfour as Betty, the rebellious daughter of a millionaire who wants to marry Jean, a man from a lower social class. She runs away to France with him, and while they are there, Betty lives a life of luxury on the profits from her father's champagne business.

However, her father is outraged by their relationship and cuts off Betty's allowance. In an attempt to teach her a lesson, he pretends that his business is failing and he will soon be bankrupt. This forces Betty to face the reality of her situation and she must support herself by getting a job in a night club.

Meanwhile, Jean also faces his own struggles as his lack of financial stability and social standing makes it difficult for him to gain Betty's father's approval. The couple's relationship is put to the test, but they eventually overcome these obstacles and their love triumphs.

Champagne is known for its lighthearted and comedic tone, as well as its stunning visuals and imaginative camera work. It was a critical and commercial success and helped establish Hitchcock as a prominent director in the silent film era.
