Cecil Stevens is a shy and introverted fourth grader who faces constant ridicule from his classmates due to his lisp. Every time he introduces himself, he blushes and stumbles over his words, causing his classmates to tease him mercilessly. One day, he decides to take matters into his own hands and change his name to Michael Jordan, after the famous basketball player whom he idolizes.
As Cecil begins to introduce himself as Michael Jordan, he finds that his classmates are suddenly more interested in being his friend and hanging out with him. His newfound popularity allows him to bond with a group of outcasts like himself, including the school's resident weirdo, Abby, and a kid named Nate who is always getting into trouble.
However, as Cecil's popularity grows, he begins to realize that he misses being himself and that pretending to be someone else is not the solution to his problems. With the help of his friends, he must find the courage to be true to himself and accept who he is, lisp and all.
