Frank Abagnale Jr. had a troubled childhood after his parents' divorce. His father was unable to continue supporting his family, and his mother started working long hours to make ends meet. Frank started forging checks at the age of 15 to get money to support his lifestyle.
After running away from home, Frank decides to impersonate a Pan Am pilot. He manages to get a pilot's uniform and a Pan Am ID card, and that becomes the start of his conning career. He manages to take advantage of the airline industry's generosity to pilots at the time, traveling all over the world on fake tickets.
Frank then decides to impersonate a doctor, managing to get a job as a pediatrician in a hospital without any qualifications. He is able to fool the medical staff and patients for a while before being caught.
As Frank's crimes escalate, an FBI agent, Carl Hanratty, is assigned to track him down. However, Frank's cunning ways make him difficult to catch. He manages to evade the authorities by changing his identity and creating new scams.
While on the run, Frank falls in love with Brenda, a young woman he meets while posing as a legal prosecutor. But, when her father becomes suspicious of Frank's identity, he is forced to flee again.
Eventually, Frank is captured by the FBI and sentenced to 12 years in prison. However, the FBI sees potential in Frank's unique skills and offers him a job teaching them how to prevent fraud.
The movie ends with Frank giving a lecture on fraud prevention, and the real-life Frank Abagnale Jr. walking onto the stage to thunderous applause.
