Chuck, played by Tom Hanks, finds himself stranded on the island with no means of escape or communication with the outside world. He struggles to survive, initially relying on the few items he salvages from the wreckage of the plane, including a volleyball that he names Wilson and uses as a companion. Chuck learns to make shelter, find food and water, and even creates fire using a piece of metal he finds.
As days turn into months and months into years, Chuck becomes increasingly desperate to leave the island and return to civilization. He constructs a raft and sets out to sea, only to be thwarted by a violent storm that destroys his raft.
Despite the overwhelming odds, Chuck persists in his efforts to escape, transforming himself from a city-dwelling executive into a skilled survivor. When he finally does return to society, he finds that everything has changed, including his relationship with Kelly, played by Helen Hunt.
