Carmen: A Hip Hopera is a modern-day adaptation of the classic opera Carmen. The film follows the story of Carmen Brown, a young and beautiful woman who works at a factory in Philadelphia. Carmen is wild and free-spirited, and she catches the eye of officer Derrick Hill, a dedicated and hardworking cop who is engaged to be married.
As Derrick continues to pursue Carmen, he begins to uncover the corrupt activities of his superior, Lt. Miller. Miller is involved in a drug ring and has been using his position as a police officer to cover up his activities. As Derrick tries to bring Miller to justice, he finds himself torn between his duty as a police officer and his love for Carmen.
Meanwhile, Carmen's ex-boyfriend, Blaze, is released from prison and begins to cause trouble for her and everyone around her. Blaze is determined to win Carmen back and will stop at nothing to make her his.
The film features several musical numbers, including Beyoncé's hit song "Crazy in Love." Beyoncé plays the role of Carmen, while Mekhi Phifer plays Derrick Hill and Mos Def plays Lt. Miller. The film was directed by Robert Townsend and was released in 2001.
