In Career Opportunities, Josie (played by Jennifer Connelly) is a rebellious and bored teenager who feels stifled by her privileged life and controlling father. She has no real direction in life and spends her days aimlessly wandering around town, trying to find something to fill the void in her life.
One day, she decides to apply for a job at the local Target store, hoping to escape her sheltered existence and start building her own life. Despite her lack of experience and motivation, she is hired for the night shift.
After her first shift, Josie falls asleep in the store's dressing room, only to wake up and find that she is locked in for the night with Jim (played by Frank Whaley), a town outcast and compulsive liar who is also working as a janitor at Target.
Over the course of the night, Josie and Jim forge an unlikely bond as they explore the empty store, playing with toys and indulging in all the food and drinks they can find. They also reveal their deepest secrets and fears to each other, discovering that they have more in common than they initially thought.
As the night progresses, however, the real world begins to intrude on their fantasy. Josie's father sends out a search party to find her, while the store manager discovers that they are still in the building and calls the police. Josie and Jim must work together to evade the authorities and find a way out of the store, all while trying to figure out what they want from their lives.
Career Opportunities is a coming-of-age comedy-drama that explores themes of identity, growing up, and the search for meaning and purpose in life. It was directed by Bryan Gordon and released in 1991.
