In the movie, the Greek fisherman's name is Mandras, and he leaves his fiancee Pelagia to fight against the Axis powers in World War II. Meanwhile, Italian troops, led by Captain Antonio Corelli, have occupied the island of Cephalonia. At first, Pelagia resents the Italian presence and what they represent, but she is drawn to Corelli's charm and musical talents.
As Pelagia and Corelli fall in love, Mandras is presumed dead and Pelagia is heartbroken. However, Mandras returns and discovers Pelagia's relationship with Corelli. Tensions arise between the Greeks and Italians on the island as the war reaches its climax, and Corelli ultimately decides to protect his love for Pelagia by peacefully surrendering to the Germans, despite the potential consequences.
The novel on which the movie is based, Captain Corelli's Mandolin by Louis de Bernieres, explores the brutality of war and the complexities of human nature.
