Captain Clegg

Horror  United Kingdom

Captain Clegg is a British horror film released in 1962, directed by Peter Graham Scott and starring Peter Cushing, Oliver Reed, and Yvonne Romain. The movie is based on the novel "Doctor Syn: A Tale of the Romney Marsh" by Russell Thorndike.

The movie is set in the late 18th century, where the British government is trying to curb the smuggling activities on the Romney Marshes. In order to catch the smugglers, they send Captain Collier (Patrick Allen) and his men to the area. However, their efforts are thwarted by the mysterious Marsh Phantoms, who scare off the soldiers and cause them to die of fright.

Dr. Blyss (Peter Cushing) is the local vicar of Dymchurch and a friend of the smugglers. He is also believed to know the secret behind the Marsh Phantoms. When Captain Collier arrives in the village, Dr. Blyss takes an interest in him and his men and tries to warn them about the dangers of the marshes.

As the story progresses, it is revealed that the Marsh Phantoms are a cover for the smugglers' activities. The leader of the smugglers is none other than Captain Clegg (Oliver Reed), who is also buried in the village graveyard. Dr. Blyss is torn between his loyalty to the smugglers and his duty as a man of the cloth.

The movie has a gothic horror feel to it with suspenseful music, eerie fog, and dark night scenes. Peter Cushing and Oliver Reed deliver exceptional performances, making the movie a classic. The movie was released under different titles such as "Captain Clegg" in the UK and "Night Creatures" in the US.
