Canadian Strain is a comedy-drama film that follows the story of Anne Banting, a small-time weed dealer who has been catering to her loyal customers for years. However, with the legalization of cannabis in Canada, Anne finds herself struggling to keep up with the competition posed by large corporations who have now entered the market.
As Anne watches her customer base dwindle, she decides to take matters into her own hands by producing her own strain of weed, which she calls "Pennywise." Her unique strain is a hit with her remaining customers, but it eventually catches the attention of the government, who sees her as a threat to their monopoly over the cannabis industry.
In a desperate bid to save her business, Anne decides to take on the government, embarking on a humorous and poignant journey through the highs and lows of the newly legalized cannabis industry in Canada.
Canadian Strain stars Jess Salgueiro as Anne, alongside Naomi Snieckus, Colin Mochrie, and Benjamin Ayres. The film was directed by Geordie Sabbagh and premiered at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival.
