Marty Mackenzie, played by Leslie Nielsen, is a struggling actor who is fed up with the rejection he constantly receives at auditions. He decides to switch gears and try his hand at private investigating.
He meets Jack Potter, played by Lochlyn Munro, a veteran private eye who takes Marty under his wing. They are hired to investigate a murder plot against a wealthy gravel pit owner in the small town of Beaver Ridge.
As they begin their investigation, Marty quickly learns that being a private investigator is not as glamorous as he thought it would be. He struggles to keep up with the physical demands of the job and the dangerous situations they find themselves in.
Meanwhile, they encounter a variety of eccentric and suspicious characters in the town, including a shifty motel owner, a flirtatious waitress, and a group of environmental activists.
As they get closer to solving the case, Marty and Jack realize that they may have bitten off more than they can chew. With the help of some unexpected allies, they must race against time to thwart the murder plot and bring the perpetrators to justice.
