The story of Caddyshack revolves around the young and ambitious Danny Noonan, who is a caddy at the Bushwood Country Club. Danny is determined to win a scholarship to college so that he can avoid working at the local lumber yard. His chance to do so comes when Judge Elihu Smails announces that he will be sponsoring the caddy golf tournament at the club. Danny's goal is to win the tournament and impress the Judge enough to secure the scholarship.

However, Danny's plans are complicated by the eccentric and outrageous members of the club, including Al Czervik, a boisterous businessman, and Rodney Dangerfield's character, Ty Webb, a hedonistic golfer who becomes Danny's mentor. Meanwhile, the Judge is constantly at odds with his boorish and obnoxious grandson, Spalding, who wreaks havoc at the club with his reckless behavior.

The film features a number of memorable scenes, including Bill Murray's performance as Carl Spackler, the deranged and comical groundskeeper, who is obsessed with killing a mischievous gopher that is destroying the golf course.
