Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker is a horror-thriller film released in 1982, directed by William Asher and starring Susan Tyrrell, Jimmy McNichol, and Julia Duffy. The film follows Cheryl Roberts (Tyrrell), a widow who raises her nephew Billy (McNichol) as her own son, showering him with affection and attention. However, when Billy's basketball coach rejects his advances, Billy begins to develop homosexual feelings for the coach and starts to distance himself from Cheryl.
Cheryl becomes increasingly possessive of Billy and resorts to extreme measures to keep him close. She murders anyone who comes between them, including her own boss (played by Bill Paxton) and a nosy neighbor (played by Steve Eastin). Meanwhile, Detective Carlson (played by Bo Svenson) investigates the murders and becomes suspicious of Billy's involvement.
As Cheryl's mental state deteriorates, Billy himself begins to experience disturbing hallucinations and nightmares. Eventually, the film reaches a dramatic climax as Detective Carlson confronts the disturbed trio in their home, resulting in a bloody and violent showdown.
Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker was notable for its controversial depiction of homosexuality and its graphic violence, including scenes of castration and dismemberment. The film has since gained a cult following for its over-the-top performances and shock value.
