In Bustin' Loose, Joe Braxton, played by comedian Richard Pryor, is a former bank robber who is struggling to rebuild his life after being released from prison. However, after violating his probation by getting into yet another bar fight, his parole officer decides to give him one more chance.
Braxton is tasked with driving a group of special needs children from Philadelphia to a farm in rural Washington state. Along for the ride is their no-nonsense teacher, Vivian Perry, played by Cicely Tyson. Perry initially clashes with Braxton's brash personality, but they eventually form an unlikely bond.
As they make their way across the country, the group encounters a series of misadventures, including a run-in with racist rednecks, a car accident, and a detour through a brothel. Through it all, Braxton and Perry learn to trust each other and the children learn to overcome their disabilities and embrace their unique talents.
