Bernice "Bernie" Rhodenbarr, portrayed by Whoopi Goldberg, is known for her sneaky criminal behavior as a burglar and also runs a bookstore in New York City. However, when Bernie sneaks into the luxurious mansion of a wealthy couple to steal their valuable art collection, she unexpectedly finds a dead body in the bedroom.
Bernie's friend Carl Hefler, played by Bobcat Goldthwait, is a dog groomer who she confides in about the murder. They decide to solve the crime and clear Bernie's name while avoiding the police.
While investigating, Bernie discovers that the murder may be connected to the wealthy couple's involvement in a fraudulent investment scheme. She also finds herself fighting off the advances of an attractive detective, played by John Goodman, who is investigating the murder.
As Bernie and Carl dig deeper into the case, they encounter dangerous criminals and must maneuver their way through tricky situations to keep themselves out of trouble. The movie, directed by Hugh Wilson, is based on the novel "The Burglar in the Closet" by Lawrence Block.
