Burden is a 2018 American drama film that revolves around the life of Mike Burden, a recovering alcoholic, and former Ku Klux Klan member. The movie is based on a true story set in Laurens, South Carolina, in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Five years ago, Mike was involved in a drunk driving accident that killed a young black man named Jerome. Mike and his brother, who was driving the car, were charged and sentenced to prison. In prison, Mike realizes the error of his ways and denounces his membership with the Ku Klux Klan.
After his release from prison, he is taken in by a black Reverend named Kennedy, who helps him start a new life. Mike eventually falls in love with Kennedy's daughter, Judy, who is initially reluctant to start a relationship with him because of his past.
However, Mike's past comes back to haunt him when he discovers that Judy's ex-boyfriend was the brother of the man that he and his brother killed in the car accident. Judy's ex-boyfriend is a white supremacist who is still trying to seek revenge against Mike for his past.
As the tensions rise, Mike must confront his past and try to prove to Judy that he has changed for the better. Burden is a powerful and emotional story about redemption, forgiveness, and the difficult journey towards overcoming prejudice and racism.
