Bullets Over Broadway was directed by Woody Allen and was released in 1994. The movie stars John Cusack as David Shayne, Dianne Wiest as Helen Sinclair, Chazz Palminteri as Cheech, Jennifer Tilly as Olive Neal, and Mary-Louise Parker as Ellen.
The movie is a comedy-drama that explores the conflicts between art and commerce in the world of theater. David Shayne is a struggling playwright who wants to produce his own play, but he can't find the funding for it. After many rejections, he finally meets a gangster named Nick Valenti, who offers to fund the play in exchange for giving a part to his girlfriend Olive Neal.
David is initially reluctant to compromise his artistic vision, but he eventually agrees to cast Olive in the role of a psychiatrist. However, Olive proves to be a terrible actress, and David struggles to make the play work with her in the cast.
Meanwhile, David's relationship with his girlfriend Ellen begins to suffer as he becomes more and more focused on the play. He also has to deal with the eccentricities of the other actors, including Warner Purcell, who is a compulsive eater, and Helen Sinclair, a grand dame who wants her part to be jazzed up.
As the play comes closer to opening night, David is forced to confront the compromises he has made and decides whether art or life is more important to him. The movie features a memorable score of jazz and swing music from the 1920s.
