Bud and Lou are two street hustlers who accidentally become enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II in order to avoid the police. Despite initially struggling with the newfound discipline and tasks of army life, they eventually prove their worth during a charity boxing match organized by their drill instructor, Sergeant Collins (played by Nat Pendleton).
Meanwhile, wealthy socialite Randolph Parker III (Lee Bowman) and his former chauffeur, Bob (Alan Curtis), both join the same unit as Bud and Lou. The unit is also joined by a group of female singers who become the object of affection for all the soldiers. The main love interest is Judy (Jane Frazee), a beautiful and talented singer who is courted by both Randolph and Bob.
Throughout training and subsequent military operations, Bud and Lou manage to provide comic relief and eventually win over the hearts of their fellow soldiers. However, their antics also cause problems and challenges for the unit, particularly when they accidentally steal a plane and are sent to the front lines.
Despite the challenges, the soldiers succeed in their mission and are hailed as heroes. Randolph and Bob both win the heart of Judy, each showing their own strengths and virtues. The film ends with the entire unit singing a rousing rendition of "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy."
