As Kenai lives his life as a bear, he discovers that his childhood friend, Nita, is about to be married to a man named Atka. However, Nita realizes that she needs to burn the amulet Kenai gave her before he became a bear in order to truly sever their bond and move on with her life. Kenai agrees to help her, and they set out on a journey to find a place where the Northern Lights touch the earth.
Along the way, they encounter many obstacles and dangers, such as being chased by an angry bear and getting caught in a wild river. Meanwhile, Kenai's adoptive brother Koda, who becomes jealous of Kenai's newfound friendship with Nita, sets out to find them with the help of his other animal friends.
Eventually, Kenai and Nita reach their destination, but they are forced to confront their feelings for each other and whether or not they truly want to let go of their past. In the end, they burn the amulet and say their goodbyes, while Koda learns to accept that his brother's love life is separate from his own.
