Broken Embraces is a Spanish film directed by Pedro Almodóvar and released in 2009. The film tells the story of Harry Caine, a blind writer who was once known as Mateo Blanco, a renowned film director. 14 years ago, while directing his last movie "Girl On a Mission", Mateo falls in love with the lead actress Lena and they begin an affair, despite the fact that she is married to a wealthy businessman named Ernesto Martel.

As their romance intensifies, Ernesto becomes increasingly jealous and possessive of Lena, and eventually discovers their affair. He confronts them both on set and in the ensuing struggle, Lena is accidentally killed. Grief-stricken, Mateo abandons his career and adopts the persona of Harry Caine, living out the remainder of his life as a blind writer.

Years later, Harry is visited by Ray X, a young man claiming to be Ernesto's son. Ray is seeking information about his father's past, specifically any ties he may have had to Lena and to the film she starred in. As Harry begins to recall the events of 14 years ago, he is forced to confront the painful memories of his lost love and his role in her death.

Broken Embraces is a complex and multi-layered film that explores themes of love, loss, regret, and the power of art. It features a talented ensemble cast, including Penelope Cruz as Lena, Lluís Homar as Mateo/Harry, and Blanca Portillo as Judit, Harry's longtime friend and assistant. The film was well-received by critics and received multiple award nominations, including a Golden Globe nod for Best Foreign Language Film.
