After meeting online and developing a rapport through e-mail and instant messaging, Peter invites Charlene to his home in order to meet in person. However, when Charlene arrives, Peter is surprised to discover that she is an African-American woman who has just escaped from prison. Despite his initial shock, Peter decides to help Charlene clear her name, which might mean visiting her former associates in order to get the inside scoop on her case.
As Peter dives deeper into Charlene's case, he begins to realize that she might not be exactly who she claims to be. Charlene is forced to reveal that she is actually a brilliant con artist who has been setting Peter up from the very beginning. As she waltzes in and out of his life, stealing from his bank accounts and causing mayhem wherever she goes, Peter must decide whether or not to continue helping her.
Meanwhile, Peter's firm is in the middle of a high-profile case that could make or break the company. His boss, Mrs. Arness (Joan Plowright), is pressuring him to deliver a victory at all costs, even if that means throwing Charlene under the bus. With everything on the line, Peter must ultimately decide what he is willing to risk in order to protect the woman he loves.
