The movie follows cheerleaders Carson and Brooke, the captains of rival cheerleading squads, the West Side Sharks and East Coast Jets, respectively. They both have aspirations to win the "Cheer Camp Nationals" at Camp Spirit-Thunder where they are attending.
When a mishap causes Carson to end up with the Jets, and Brooke with the Sharks, they have to work together to train their new teams. As they prepare to compete against each other at the National Championship, Carson falls for Penn, a member of the Jets squad, while Brooke's ex-boyfriend, a former member of the Jets, tries to sabotage her team's chances of winning.
The movie features high-energy dance sequences and cheerleading stunts, with a musical feel reminiscent of West Side Story. The rivalry between the two teams escalates throughout the film, but ultimately the main characters learn to put their differences aside and work together to achieve their goals.
