Jesse Aarons lives in a rural area with his family. He is introverted, has no friends and often escapes into his own world to deal with his problems. One day in school, a new girl named Leslie Burke arrives and is assigned to sit next to Jesse. Although they start off as distant and somewhat cold to each other, they soon bond over their shared experiences of being different and not fitting in.
Leslie is from a wealthy family from the city and has a creative, imaginative mind. She inspires Jesse to use his own creativity and together they create their own fantasy world in the forest called Terabithia. They go there to escape their problems and play out their imaginations as King and Queen of their land. However, despite their newfound happiness, Jesse is still dealing with issues at home and school, where he is bullied by classmates and his father's expectations.
One day, while Jessie is at a museum for a school field trip, he learns from his principal that Leslie has died while trying to cross a nearby creek during a storm. Jesse is devastated and feels guilty for not being with Leslie when she died. However, he later learns that Leslie's imagination and Terabithia will always be with him, and he becomes more accepting of who he is and finds comfort in remembering the happy moments he shared with Leslie.
