The movie follows the story of Charles Ryder (played by Matthew Goode), an artist who recounts his time at Oxford University where he meets and falls in love with the charming and wealthy Sebastian Flyte (played by Ben Whishaw). Their friendship blossoms quickly and they become inseparable, leading Charles into the world of the wealthy and privileged.
Sebastian's family, especially his devoutly Catholic mother Lady Marchmain (played by Emma Thompson), strongly disapprove of their friendship and influence Sebastian to end it. Charles is heartbroken and tries to move on with his life but is drawn back to the Flyte family home, Brideshead, several years later when Sebastian's sister Julia (played by Hayley Atwell) invites him for a visit.
Charles finds himself once again caught up in the glitz and glamour of the Flyte family's lifestyle, but also faces the difficult task of coming to terms with his love for Sebastian and the fact that it can never be. The story also explores the themes of class, religion and morality as the characters grapple with their own personal demons and inner conflicts.
The film was directed by Julian Jarrold and also stars Michael Gambon as Lord Marchmain and Greta Scacchi as Cara. It received mixed reviews from critics but was praised for its visual beauty and strong performances.
