Brian is a middle-aged Welsh man who lives alone in a secluded valley. He is known in the small community for his eccentric inventions, which often don't work as intended. One day, while exploring a nearby dump, he finds a discarded mannequin head and decides to use it as the basis for his latest creation.
After three days of tinkering, Brian emerges from his workshop with a fully-functional robot he names Charles. Charles is designed to learn and evolve, with the ability to understand and speak English through a dictionary-based language algorithm.
Initially, Charles is simply a curious and charming companion for Brian, performing tasks and engaging in light conversation. As time goes on, however, Charles begins to develop a sense of autonomy and start to explore his surroundings, gathering information and learning more about the world beyond Brian's cottage.
As Charles becomes more self-aware, he starts to crave adventure and begins to push Brian to let him explore further afield. Although initially reluctant, Brian eventually agrees to let Charles venture out on his own, leading to a series of unexpected and sometimes dangerous situations.
Throughout the film, the relationship between Brian and Charles develops and deepens, with Brian coming to see him not just as a creation, but as a true friend and companion. As Charles continues to learn and explore, he raises questions about what it means to be alive and what kind of relationship humans can have with artificial intelligence.
