Brannigan, released in 1975, features John Wayne as Jim Brannigan, a Chicago cop who is sent to London to escort a notorious American mobster named Ben Larkin (played by John Vernon) back to America for trial. However, when Brannigan arrives in London, he discovers that Larkin has been kidnapped by his own lawyer, and the kidnappers are demanding a ransom of $2 million for his release.
Brannigan soon finds himself in a race against time to track down Larkin and his kidnappers, with the help of the local police force led by the stuffy London detective named Swann (played by Richard Attenborough). As Brannigan follows a trail of clues across the city, he clashes with Swann over their differing approaches to law enforcement, but ultimately they join forces in a bid to rescue Larkin and bring his kidnappers to justice.
The movie is a classic action thriller, with plenty of car chases, fist fights, and shootouts, as Brannigan and his team pursue Larkin's kidnappers through the streets of London. Along the way, he also enjoys some romance with a British woman named Jennifer (played by Judy Geeson).
Brannigan was the only film John Wayne ever made in the UK, and it was directed by Douglas Hickox, known for his work on crime dramas such as Sitting Target and Entertaining Mr. Sloane. The movie received mixed reviews from critics, but was a box office success, grossing over $7 million worldwide.
