The Sinister Liaison: Lost Sanity in NYC

Comedy,Horror  United States of America

In the 1988 horror-comedy film Brain Damage, directed by Frank Henenlotter, the normal and average guy is named Brian (played by Rick Hearst) who leads a mundane life with his girlfriend Barbara in a small New York City apartment. One day, Brian stumbles upon a mysterious and malevolent creature named Aylmer (voiced by John Zacherle), who is a blue, slug-like parasite with a face that attaches to his brainstem.

Aylmer feeds Brian a hallucinogenic blue liquid which gives him an intense euphoric high, but also twists his perception of reality and coerces him to commit heinous acts. Aylmer then reveals that he needs to feed on human brains to survive.

As Brian becomes increasingly dependent on Aylmer and the blue fluid, he spirals deeper into addiction and madness, straining his relationship with Barbara and causing him to resort to murder to appease Aylmer's cravings. Meanwhile, a mysterious old man (played by Theodore Sorel) is hunting Aylmer with the intention of destroying the creature.

The film explores themes of addiction, influence, and morality, and features graphic depictions of violence and drug use. Despite its controversial subject matter, Brain Damage has gained a cult following over the years for its unique blend of horror and dark humor.
