Boys on the Side is a 1995 American comedy-drama film directed by Herbert Ross and written by Don Roos. The film stars Whoopi Goldberg as Jane, Mary-Louise Parker as Robin and Drew Barrymore as Holly.
The story follows Jane, a singer in a club, who is heartbroken after breaking up with her girlfriend. Out of her misery, she answers an advertisement placed by Robin, a real estate agent with AIDS who is seeking a travel partner for a cross-country road trip.
During their journey from New York City to Los Angeles, the two women pick up Holly in Pittsburgh, who is trying to escape an abusive relationship. The three women, who are all from very different backgrounds, form a bond as they help and support each other through their personal struggles.
Jane is dealing with the loss of her girlfriend, Robin with her AIDS diagnosis and Holly with her abusive past. Along the way, the trio faces various challenges, but their friendship provides them with the strength and courage to overcome them.
As they travel across the country in a Chevrolet Impala, they stop at various locations and meet different people. In Arizona, they meet a rancher who offers them a place to stay and helps them fix their car. In New Mexico, they assist a group of women to raise funds for a children's center and end up performing a song together.
The film features a great soundtrack, including music from artists such as Bonnie Raitt, Annie Lennox, and Joni Mitchell. Overall, Boys on the Side is an uplifting film about the power of friendship, kindness, and self-discovery.
