Abbey is a talented interior designer but has been unlucky in love, leading her to give up on dating altogether. One evening, she decides to take a walk on the beach to clear her head, but ends up getting stood up by the one guy she had been interested in for a while. Feeling dejected, Abbey sees a bottle washed up on the shore and gets the idea to write a heartfelt letter to her future love, put it in the bottle and toss it out to sea.
Months later, Nick, a fisherman, discovers the bottle while out at sea. Intrigued by the message inside, he decides to reach out to Abbey and they begin corresponding through letters. They eventually decide to meet in person, but Abbey is hesitant, worried that the fantasy she's built up in her mind won't live up to reality.
As they spend time together, Abbey and Nick begin to fall for each other, but things become complicated when Abbey discovers Nick's connection to her ex-boyfriend.
