In Bottle Shock, Steven Spurrier is a wine merchant and educator in Paris who becomes interested in organizing a blind taste test to challenge traditional French wine connoisseurs. He travels to California to find some affordable wines to bring to the competition and stumbles upon a small, struggling winery in Napa Valley run by Jim Barrett and his son Bo.
Initially dismissive of the California wines, Spurrier is surprised to find that Jim's chardonnay is actually quite impressive. He tries to convince Jim to enter his wine in the blind tasting, but Jim is resistant, feeling that the competition is rigged in favor of the French wines. Meanwhile, Bo falls for Sam, a local bartender who helps him navigate the world of non-wine related pursuits.
Despite Jim's reluctance, Spurrier manages to convince him to enter the competition, and even travels to Napa Valley with several judges to sample the wine in person. The competition is fierce, but ultimately, Jim's wine is declared the winner, shocking the French wine experts.
Bottle Shock is based on the true story of the Judgment of Paris, a 1976 wine competition in which California wines surprised and surpassed their French counterparts, putting Napa Valley on the map as a world-class wine region. The film explores themes of tradition, culture clash, and the power of perseverance and belief in oneself.
