Born on the Fourth of July is a 1989 biographical war drama film directed by Oliver Stone and starring Tom Cruise as Ron Kovic. The film is based on the autobiography of Ron Kovic, who was born on July 4, 1946. Ron Kovic is a young, patriotic man who volunteers for the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. He is wounded in battle and becomes paralyzed from the chest down.
After returning to the United States, he feels betrayed by the country he fought for and becomes an anti-war and pro-human rights political activist. He attends protests and rallies against the war and speaks out against the government's treatment of veterans. Kovic becomes a prominent figure in the anti-war movement and even meets with high-ranking members of the government to advocate for better treatment of veterans.
Throughout the film, Kovic battles with his physical limitations and psychological trauma, which are exacerbated by his experiences in Vietnam. He struggles with alcoholism and PTSD, and at one point attempts suicide. Over time, he finds solace and purpose in his activism and becomes an outspoken advocate for peace and equality.
