Hedy Lamarr was a Hollywood movie star who rose to fame in the 1940s. She was known for her stunning beauty and captivating performances onscreen. Despite her success in the entertainment industry, Hedy Lamarr was also an underappreciated genius inventor who made groundbreaking contributions to the field of technology.
During World War II, Lamarr collaborated with composer George Antheil to develop a technology that would prevent Nazi submarines from jamming Allied torpedoes. Their invention, known as frequency-hopping spread spectrum, used a system of rapidly changing frequencies to make signals difficult to intercept.
Although the U.S. Navy initially rejected their invention, it later became the foundation for modern technologies such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS. Lamarr's contributions to the field of technology were not widely recognized until late in her life, long after she had retired from Hollywood.
The documentary Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story explores both Lamarr's glamorous Hollywood career and her lesser-known contributions to science and technology. Through interviews with Lamarr's family, friends, and colleagues, as well as archival footage and excerpts from her personal journals, the film provides a fascinating look at the life of this multi-talented woman.
