Bolt, a white German Shepherd with a black lightning bolt on his side, is the star of a television show where he plays a super-powered dog who is on a mission to save his owner, Penny (voiced by Miley Cyrus), from the evil Dr. Calico (voiced by Malcolm McDowell). Bolt believes that all of his actions on the show are real and that he actually possesses superpowers, including super strength, the ability to produce lasers from his eyes, and the power to create a powerful sonic bark.
However, Bolt's life takes a turn when the show's producers decide to add a cliffhanger to the end of an episode, causing Bolt to believe that Penny has been kidnapped and to break out of his trailer to rescue her. In the chaos that follows, Bolt accidentally ends up in a box and is shipped to New York City.
In the unfamiliar surroundings of the city, Bolt realizes that he no longer has his superpowers and becomes lost and alone. He meets a streetwise cat named Mittens (voiced by Susie Essman) who helps him navigate the city in his search for Penny. Along the way, Bolt learns to be a normal dog and develops a newfound friendship with Mittens and an enthusiastic hamster named Rhino (voiced by Mark Walton).
As Bolt and his new friends journey across the country, they encounter a series of obstacles, including run-ins with animal control, exposure to harsh weather, and confrontations with a pack of alley cats. Eventually, they make their way to Hollywood, where Bolt is reunited with Penny and learns the truth about his show and his true identity as an actor, not a superhero.
Bolt's journey teaches him the value of true friendship, the importance of facing reality, and the power of love to overcome any obstacles. The film also features a heartwarming message about the bond between humans and pets and the power of love and acceptance.
